Astrology Report for July 2011

July is highlighted by a Solar Eclipse in Cancer, a stationary Uranus and a second New Moon in Leo. The strong cardinal sign energies in early July will help to keep us busy with goals and activities; however the pace will gradually wind down with the beginning of the Mercury retrograde shadow period in mid-month.

On July 1 a New Moon Solar Eclipse will occur at 9 Cancer 12. Cancer rules domestic matters, the feminine principle and food, along with the traits of being sensitive, nurturing and protective. The shadow side is being too security-oriented, fearful and focused on the past. This eclipse is part of a challenging cardinal grand cross with Saturn, Uranus and Pluto that can bring many dynamic changes to existing structures and patterns. This is a South Node eclipse, emphasizing the forces of the past that need to be released to make way for the new. A close Saturn/Sun aspect can reveal outworn emotional responses and fear-based behaviors, especially within family settings. It can also help us gain more discipline and detachment. This is a good month to nurture ourselves and others, along with asking for support when needed. The Sabian symbol for this degree speaks of “the arduous training for perfection in order to fully manifest an ideal.”

On July 7, a Jupiter/Pluto trine in Taurus/Capricorn can bring opportunities for prosperity, new growth and expanding our horizons. This aspect stays in range until mid-April 2012, peaking again in October and March 2012. This is a good time to start or expand a business or begin an in-depth study of a metaphysical subject with practical applications.

Over the next week (July 7-13) Venus in Cancer will form a cardinal cross with Saturn, Pluto and Uranus, which may bring challenges in relationships and finances. Possessiveness and freedom/closeness dilemmas can emerge at this time. On July 8 a favorable sextile between Venus and Jupiter provides a more optimistic view that can bring expansive, heart-centered communications.

Uranus turns stationary retrograde on July 9 at 4 Aries 34. Planetary and personal changes can intensify at this time, so be prepared for more earth changes during these few days. Our urges towards independence and freedom will also be enhanced during this period.

The Full Moon occurs on July 14 at 22 Capricorn 28. Capricorn is an earth sign ruling career, authority and structures; and being practical, disciplined and persevering. Capricorn can also be overly restrictive and focused on maintaining the status quo. A positive use of this period would be to incorporate a daily discipline to help you tune in better to your inner guidance to handle the coming changes more effectively. The Sabian symbols for these degree areas are “the meeting of a literary society” and “a soldier receiving two awards for bravery in combat.” As we work in a cooperative fashion within our own communities, we can also receive recognition for our individual talents and noble efforts.

July 15-16 features Mercury in a series of challenging aspects with the outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. We can more easily be thrown off balance now by becoming too overextended with time and resources. Take the time to slow down and re-center your energies. The Mercury shadow period begins on July 14, which can create more miscommunications and delays. Also, be wary of taking any unnecessary risks from July 21-23, when accident-prone Mars aligns with the South Node in Gemini.

The second New Moon occurs on July 30 at 7 Leo 16. This lunation is aligned with Venus, makes a wide square to Jupiter and a harmonious trine to Uranus. Leo rules children, creativity and recognition; and being confidant, proud, enthusiastic, generous and courageous. The shadow side is being arrogant, willful and self-centered. This is a good month to use creative manifestation to attract either a new relationship or greater harmony in our existing relationships. We can also strive towards more balanced self-expression within a close relationship. The Sabian symbol for this degree, “a communist activist spreading his revolutionary ideals,” suggests that older ways of thinking are now being courageously challenged and replaced by more soul-centered ideas and ideals.

In August Mercury retrogrades in Leo and Neptune returns to Aquarius. Blessings for a harmonious and joyful month!
