Astrology Report for January

Guest article by Dorene Carrel of AstroConnections

We begin the New Year with a dynamic Full Moon on January 4, which is aligned with a breakdown or breakthrough square between Uranus and Pluto. This challenging aspect has been ongoing since 2012. A potent SuperMoon in Aquarius occurs on January 20, followed the next day by Mercury retrograde in Aquarius. A rare Uranus alignment with the South Node signifies karmic turning points. We can move forward this month, but be prepared to make adjustments and to exercise patience and perseverance.  There is the prospect of enjoyable social activities from a Venus/Jupiter opposition in mid-month.

The Full Moon occurs on January 4 at 14 Cancer 31.  It is aligned with Pluto, Vesta, Uranus and the lunar nodes, all in Cardinal signs. The focus is on home, family and inner/outer foundations of support.  We may want to take action, yet need to overcome deeper fears and insecurities. Uranus conjunct the South Node and Pluto square the nodes can signify karmic lessons and turning points. The asteroid Vesta can provide the dedication needed to confront our fears and take daily steps toward our goals.  The Sabian symbols for this degree, “In a sumptuous dining hall guests relax after partaking of a huge banquet,” and “In a hospital, the children’s ward is filled with toys,” suggest acknowledging and appreciating the abundance that is all around us, and having faith that our needs can be fully met.

On January 9-10 Mars in Aquarius forms a challenging semi-square with Uranus and Pluto, which brings a restless, unsettled period.  The square between Mars and Saturn on January 14 may test our sense of confidence and productivity. The Mars/Neptune alignment in Pisces on January 19 indicates that a re-attunement with our visions will bring more healing and empowerment.  On that same day, Venus in Aquarius opposes Jupiter in Leo, giving us a break with a lighter mood and sense of adventure.

On January 20 the New Moon occurs at 0 Aquarius. This first SuperMoon of the New Year brings extra potency to this period, which is highlighted by the Aquarian traits of being unique, freedom-loving, progressive and humanitarian. This month favors volunteering for a worthy cause, striving to live “a green lifestyle,” and collaborating with others.  The rare alignment of Uranus and the South Node in Aries also occurring today encourages us to release old baggage and beliefs to clear the way for the new growth.  The Sabian symbol for this degree is “An old adobe mission in California; the power inherent in all great human works to endure far beyond the workers’ life spans,” which suggests that all significant human achievements often begin with a compelling vision that creates great momentum.

Mercury in Aquarius turns retrograde on January 21, traveling back through Aquarius until it goes direct on February 11. This is a favorable time to revisit and revise our resolutions and intentions from New Years day.  Since Aquarius rules computers and technology, there may be more breakdowns and challenges in these areas.  Communication and travel are also affected during this period. It is best to avoid signing contracts and making major decisions at this time.

On January 30 Venus in Pisces squares Saturn in Sagittarius, which can bring challenges to relationships and finances.  There can also be issues with self-worth and feelings of limitation. With the retrograde period in effect, this is a good time to establish more clarity and realign our goals in these areas.  The Sun/Mercury alignment today greatly assists us in this process, and provides a favorable day to do brainstorming or journal writing.  On January 31 Mars aligns with Chiron in Pisces to bring healing energies to help us release old wounds from the past.

February brings an alignment of Venus and Mars in Aries to add spark to our relationships.   Happy New Year to all!
